The Art Institute of Jacksonville Presents Dustin Harewood's 'Recent Portraits' 02/11 @ 5 PM

Head

The Gallery Group at The Art Institute of Jacksonville will host the
opening reception for local artist Dustin Harewood’s ‘Recent
Portraits’ on Thursday, February 11, 2010 from 5 PM to 7 PM in The Art
Institute of Jacksonville Gallery.

Dustin Harewood’s large-scale portraits explore the complexity of the
common gaze; a gaze that can magnify both expression and vacancy.
These never-seen-before works are a shift from the popular abstract
paintings that have become a signature of Mr. Harewood.

“For the past six months I have worked on a show of portraits. All
information that I have deemed unnecessary has been removed. The
result is an isolation and examination of the most important and
expressive part of the human body: the head,” said Harewood. “The
people I have chosen to draw have all fascinated me at one time or
another. Some are well known celebrities while others are local
artists, who in my opinion should be considered just as important,”
added Harewood.

Harewood is a graduate of North Carolina Central University where he
received his Bachelor of Arts in Illustration and Graphic Design. Upon
graduation, he continued his education at The University of North
Carolina-Greensboro, where he received his Master of Fine Arts in
Painting and Drawing. Harewood is currently a Professor of Art at
Florida State College of Jacksonville.

The opening reception will include light refreshments and an
opportunity for those in attendance to speak with Harewood about his
work. The works will be displayed in The Art Institute of Jacksonville
Gallery from February 11, 2010 through March 22, 2010. The Gallery is
open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 AM until 8 PM and
Saturdays from 9 AM until 4 PM.

The Leon Castelli Group
nullspace gallery
7-10pm
nullspace, a new art gallery / studio has opened at 108 East Adams Street Jacksonville, FL, 32202. Curated by its owners, Mark Creegan, Kurt Polkey, and Jefree Shalev, the inaugural show, presented by the Leon Castelli Group and titled "Art You Can't Use", will take place on Friday, January 22, 2010 between the hours of 7 pm and 10 pm.  Show runs thru Feb 19th.

A brief description of the show: William Pope L is an iconoclastic performance artist whose themes include economics, race, disenfranchisement, and cultural values. Using Pope L's life and career as a jumping off point, Mark Creegan, Kurt Polkey and Jefree Shalev will bring drawing, performance art, installation and video together to create a cohesive jumble of ideas around those themes.

Nullspace Gallery & the asteRISK residency » A Future Memory

It is with great pleasure that I announce my involvement with Nullspace Gallery and its asteRISK residency program. Collaboratively run by Mark Creegan, Kurt Polkey, and Jefree Shalev, Nullspace Gallery is part of the Off the Grid initiative, which connects local artists with owners of vacant downtown properties. I'm extremely excited to be working with this group because I anticipate they will quickly establish themselves as the region's premiere venue for experimental and multidisciplinary art making.

Attached is a letter of intent outlining some of my goals for the project as well as the current flyer and press image.

Looking forward,

Matt
